Karpuk, like all Dwarves is a hearty, muscular man. He has many scars from many battles he has seen with the Duergar. He has thick brown hair clipped into a pony tail via a jeweled clip. His beard is usually braided and kept neat. He stands at a solid 3'7" and weighs a good hundred pounds. He dresses in dark, heavy plate armor that has a matching black tunic underneath. When not dressed for battle, he wears a vested, earthy-colored tunic with gold threading around the collar and cuffs.
Like many Dwarves, he carries a sturdy battleaxe. The battleaxe is an ancient mithril axe handed down through the ages by the men of his family. He also carries a steel dagger on his belt at all times for those sticky situations.
Personality:
Karpuk is a kind man. He prefers company over solitude and has a bright smile he wears often around others. He enjoys combat, after all, he was a professional soldier for one hundred years in the Avalastian Army. He has seen many battles in his century of service to his country and king and is proud of it. He comes from a long line of respected military men and is treated so amongst his people. Karpuk enjoys food and drink, mostly ale and a good cut of pork or beef with some onions and cheese. In combat though, his bright smile goes away and he turns into a fierce warrior as the Dwarven soldiers are known to be.
Karpuk's companion; the Gargoyle, Ski'ath is his most trusted adviser and friend. He would die for the old Gargoyle. The two are inseparable. He treats Ski'ath not as a monster, but as a brother. And he demands respect for his friend.
History:
Karpuk was born in a large manor in the mountains of Avalast. His father, older brother and uncles were all professional military men by the time Karpuk was born, and he was raised to be so. Karpuk's early childhood was filled with training for soldiering and mastering of the battle axe. Even though his training was tough, he grew up in a loving household. His father was a good man and treated his family with great respect.
Karpuk was placed into military service at the age of fifty, he was a young man and as all the young soldiers usually were, he was placed in the infantry. During his early service, he dreamed of being a legendary warrior like his father was and strove to do so. During many battles with the Grey Dwarves, Karpuk was praised for killing many and receiving little injury. He was noted by his superiors to be incredibly brave even in the face of the gravest danger.
After a few decades, Karpuk was placed in command of a small group of soldiers that shared his similar bravery and skill in combat. This group of soldiers was assigned to infiltrate the Duergar lines and dress as them. Then during battle, when they met with the surface dwarves, they were to kill them from the middle. They did not know what they were truly heading in to. They infiltrated the largest Duergar army seen since they were driven to the Underdark. This army was en route to sack the capital of Avalast. When the Avalastian Army approached, the signal was given and Karpuk and his men attacked the lines from the inside, destroying all of their siege weapons and killing the Duergar commander.
In the course of the battle, Karpuk and one other were the only survivors as the Duergar army retreated. Karpuk and the other Dwarf were awarded. A day after the battle, Karpuk found out that his older brothers and his father had been slain during a flanking maneuver that none of the Avalastian commanders foresaw. This left Karpuk the heir to his father's ancient, mithril battle axe. He received his father's weapon and his rank as a commander. At age 130, he was the youngest commander amongst the Avalastian Army. He was treated with respect, but not as much as his father was. He needed to prove himself.
This time, Avalastian Army brang the fight to the borders of the Underdark. Karpuk commanded a regiment of high echelon infantry as his father had. It was time he proved himself. In the course of the battle, Karpuk came up with a clever strategy. He disguised his soldiers as a fresh infantry regiment, giving them little armor and low quality weapons. What the Duergar didn't know was that they were actually high echelon, experienced combat veterans and amongst the best soldiers in the Avalastian Army. As the battle began, Karpuk's regiment lead the charge as all fresh infantry regiments did. The Duergar were incredibly surprised when they saw their lines getting swept away by the "fresh" infantry. Eventually, after a long, struggle, the battle was turned into a stalemate. Each army dug themselves in on one side of the battlefield.
Karpuk and the other commanders eventually broke the stalemate, they had called into their Human allies and after a week of small skirmishes, a whole regiment of cavalry arrived. The Deurgar Army, not used to cavalry tactics were overwhelmed. The army was nearly decimated and the Dwarves set up a permanent fort on the edge of the Underdark. Karpuk was rewarded greatly for his service in the battle, he was given a servant that had been a runner for the Duergar Army. He was an ancient Gargoyle named Ski'ath. Eventually, after a few years, Karpuk came to befriend the Gargoyle. The two eventually became inseparable.
As all careers do, Karpuk's came to an end. He began to have disagreements with one of the Lord he served beneath and retired from the Avalastian Army. He handed his title, his land and his money to his cousin Shimlar and left Avalast with Ski'ath to become a mercenary, that way he could soldier as he pleased.
