Merfolk have the upper body of a human and the lower body is the tail of a large fish. The tails are sometimes that of a dolphin. They have gills on each side of their neck, which allow them to breathe beneath the water.
Historical Background:
Merfolk have a long history of enchanting humans and bringing them beneath the water. Merfolk do not intend to hurt humans or other creatures, but they seem to have trouble remembering that humans cannot breathe under the water.
